Guests Rights and Responsibilities


Rights:
As a valued member of the Kent State University community, guests have the right to:

• Quality facilities that meet the diverse recreational sports needs and interests of the University community.

• A variety of program opportunities that contribute to the individual physical fitness and cooperative and competitive activities. A learning environment in which individuals can practice leadership, management, program planning and interpersonal skills. Participation and leadership in extracurricular opportunities designed to enhance social, psychological, and physiological well-being. Grievance resolution with a SRWC Staff member (who can assist in addressing individual concerns). Freedom from the threat of intimidation and/or emotional harm.


Responsibilities:
As a valued member of the University community, guests have the responsibility to:

• Read, understand, and abide by all policies and regulations necessary for the SRWC, program, and university communities to function effectively.

• Respond to and cooperate with SRWC staff members.

• Treat other guests and SRWC staff members with respect and consideration.

• Take responsibility for personal and community security.

• Recognize that everyone uses recreation facilities and their furnishings and that abuses of those areas violate the rights of others.

• Secure all personal property in lockers and/or do not bring valuables that could be lost or stolen. Kent State University is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged property.

• Be able to produce a photo ID at all times while in the facility.

Member Services and Amenities


Membership Types
Student Memberships: Full-time students on the Kent campus who are not full-time university employees are automatically members of the SRWC thanks to a portion of your activity fees. We also have very economical rates for those students who are non-assessed (this means you did not pay the student activity fee as part of your tuition), continuing education (this is offered in the summer only for students who took classes in the spring and/or are registered to take classes the next semester), or family members of students (rates below)

Faculty/Staff Memberships: As a wellness benefit to the employees of Kent State University, a portion of each faculty/staff member's own membership is paid for by the university. Couple this benefit with the Department of Recreational Services' great rate benefits for faculty/staff, your membership is extremely economical. (And don't forget the convenience of paying for your membership through payroll deduction!)

Alumni Memberships: Active card-carrying Kent State University Alumni Association members receive discounted membership rates to the Student Recreation and Wellness Center.

Community Memberships: Always recognizing the importance of being a community member, Kent State University and the Department of Recreational Services has made available to the members of the community very economical rates for membership to the Student Recreation & Wellness Center. Considering all that is available to our members, there is no other fitness, recreation, and wellness facility that can provide all of our services at low prices!

Guest Passes
• Single-day entrance passes to the SRWC are not available to the general public. Any person wishing to enter the SRWC may do so by purchasing a ten-punch pass or any other membership listed.

• Guest passes are available for our members who wish to sponsor a non-member guest in to the facility. Guest passes may be purchased by any adult member for up to two guests on any visit (exceptions will be made for immediate family of the sponsoring member). The member must accompany the guest(s) in the facility at all times, and the member assumes responsibility for the guest's actions. The guest must show a photo ID when purchasing the pass. Guest 10-punch passes are also available to our members for $50. Limitation: Members must be 18 years of age to sponsor guests. Individuals in the following categories are considered sponsored by Kent State University, and do not need an individual sponsor. They are: Kent State University employees, NEOUCOM employees and students, retired/emeritus Kent State employees, KSU main campus students carrying 1-4 credit hours, regional campus employees and students and active Alumni Association members. Proof of status must be presented in order to gain entry. The same $7 fee applies.

Spectators
• All individuals who enter the SRWC whether to participate or spectate must pay the appropriate rate.

Member Discounts
• As a benefit of membership, SRWC members receive discount rates on all program offerings, including: Community Leagues, instructional programs, PEAK youth programming and Adventure trips, clinics and workshops. Find out more about all the programs available to you by calling 330-672-4REC.

Lockers
• Day Use lockers are available on a complimentary, day use, transient basis. Patrons must provide their own lock and remove their belongings when exiting the facility. Locks left on overnight will be cut off and the contents removed. For your protection, we strongly encourage you to LOCK YOUR LOCKER. • Locks for day use can be purchased in the Pro Shop or patrons can supply their own locks. • Long term locker rentals are available and include towel service. Information is available in the Pro Shop. Locker rentals are processed at the Pro Shop.

• Cubicles are located throughout the facility for those who prefer to keep belongings within reach. Please do not leave belongings on the floor in any area of the SRWC.

Locker Refunds/Cancellations
• Requests for refunds of locker rentals should be directed to the Assistant Director, Operations. The request must be made in writing to the Assistant Director.  Written responses are provided for all documented requests.

Towel Service
• Towel service is available to all members:
$30 Annually
$20 per semester
*Towel services are processed through the Pro Shop.*

• A daily towel service is available for patrons who are in need of a towel. Members may utilize this service for $1.00 per day (includes up to 2 towels). Guests wishing to use this service must have his/her sponsor rent the towel(s). Daily towels my be purchased in Pro Shop or Wellness Suite. Towels may then be picked up at the equipment issue desk.

Parking
• Community memberships have one parking permit included in the membership fee (excluding faculty/staff category). Other members may purchase a parking pass from the Pro Shop for $10 per month (this is not available for any individual who has any other type of university parking permit), or use the four hour pass dispenser available for $1 per four hours in the SRWC lot.

Facility Rentals
• The SRWC, or activity areas within the facility, is available for rent for special events and functions during times of reduced membership usage. Additional information regarding facility rentals is available by calling 672-2053.

Group Admission
• As a benefit to our members, you may bring in a group at a special rate of $4 per person with a minimum of 10 people. A 5 day minimum advance notice is requested for group rates.

Court Reservations
• Court reservations may be made at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center throughout the year, including the summer session and break periods. Court time may be reserved the day of, or the day before the desired reservation. Reservations will be taken at the Equipment Issue Desk either in person or by telephone. Reservations may be placed or canceled by calling the Equipment Issue Desk at 672-0490.

• Guests are entitled to one reservation for one hour per day. Individuals may not use another person’s name or bring in another person’s Flashcard/Campus Visitor Card to obtain two reservations.

• For the safety of our patrons, protective eyewear is required on the racquetball courts.

Equipment Issue
• Recreational equipment is available to borrow for use inside the SRWC (and for our outdoor sand volleyball courts) and is available at the Equipment Issue Desk. Any member of the facility may borrow equipment by presenting a membership card. Any damaged or unreturned equipment or supplies will be billed to the member. Equipment available includes: basketballs, volleyballs, indoor soccer balls, racquetball racquets, weight belts, heart rate monitors, exercise balls, ping pong paddles, jump ropes, etc.

Membership Policies & Procedures


Entry Policy
• Upon entering the SRWC, please check in at the Welcome Desk. Present your Flashcard/Campus Visitor Card or guest pass receipt to the customer service specialist at the Welcome Desk. The Welcome Desk will close 15 minutes prior to building closing. No guests will be permitted to enter after that time.

• Flashcard/Campus Visitor Card not belonging to the bearer or suspicious Flashcard/Campus Visitor Card will be confiscated. The bearer and owner will face disciplinary action and a possible fine by University officials.

Unauthorized Entry Attempt: Any individual who is found in the building without proof of appropriate access or who is stopped attempting to gain illegal access will be removed from the facility. If an individual is caught more than once, conduct court and/or legal action will be pursued.

Presentation of False ID: When the SRWC staff has determined that an individual is using a false ID, the staff member will confiscate the ID and inform the individual that he/she needs to schedule a meeting with the Assistant Director, Operations. The individual on the ID card will have facility access rights removed until the meeting. The meeting should include both people involved in the incident.

• The standard penalty shall be:
First offense: written warning
Second offense: one week suspension from the SRWC
Third offense and beyond: student conduct court charges.

• The Assistant Director, Operations has the right to adjust punishment standards based on the severity and intent of the situation.

Forgotten FLASHCARD/CAMPUS VISITOR CARD: Members who are listed in the membership database can enter the SRWC one time per semester without their Flashcard/Campus Visitor Card. You must present a Photo ID verifying your identity.

• Members who forget their Flashcard/Campus Visitor Card more than once during a semester must purchase a Guest Pass at the Pro Shop and must present a photo ID verifying their identity.

LOST FLASHCARD/CAMPUS VISITOR CARD: Any community member who has lost their Campus Visitor card must pay a $10.00 replacement fee and will be issued a temporary ID to use until the new card is available.

• Any student, faculty or staff member who has lost his or her campus ID must go to the Flashcard office for a replacement.

Membership Refund or Cancellation
• Requests for refunds of memberships should be directed to the Assistant Director, Operations. As a rule, refunds will be given in the following circumstances: death of member, relocation of greater than 30 miles from Kent, permanent medical injury to the member. The request must be made in writing and the Assistant Director will respond within 5 working days of the request. Documentation of circumstances will be required.

• Annual memberships cancelled before fulfilling the 12 month contract are calculated at the month rate and charged a $20 (currently) processing fee.

• Membership privileges are not transferable.

Membership Freeze: Memberships can be frozen for reasons such as extended travel and medical injuries. Written documentation will be required. Refunds will not be given, but membership length will be extended. Parking pass expiration dates can not be extended.

• Requests for membership freeze should be directed to the Assistant Director, Operations. The request must be made in writing and the Assistant Director will respond within 5 working days of the request.

Member Conduct
Membership Suspension: SRWC management staff reserves the right to suspend a member’s privileges if a member is consistently unwilling to act in a manner consistent with appropriate public behavior, disrespects other members and/or SRWC staff, uses improper language and/or dress in the fitness setting.

• SRWC management staff reserves the right to penalize unauthorized use of Flashcards or Campus Visitor cards. Member privileges are not transferable.

Minor Membership: Individuals under 18 may not purchase an individual membership. Minors may only have access to dependent or family memberships.

Unruly Participant: This shall include, but not be limited to; verbal abuse of a Recreational Services employee, verbal altercation with another guest, disruption of operation of the SRWC, and use of obscene, vulgar or offensive language. Once these incidents have been documented, the Assistant Director will contact the participant to arrange a meeting. Facility access rights will be removed until the meeting is completed.

• The penalty will vary based on the severity, intent and scope of the incident. Penalty may include but will not be limited to; suspension from the SRWC and Student Conduct Court charges.

Disorderly Conduct: This shall include, but will not be limited to; physical acts of intimidation toward any Recreational Services employee, physical acts or intimidation toward any guest, actions deemed unsafe to guests in the facility and actions deemed detrimental to the long term health of the SRWC and/or the equipment within.

• These cases will be immediately remanded to the Kent State University Police or the City of Kent police. Student Conduct Court charges may also be served.

Assumption of Risk
• Individuals assume a risk of injury or even death while voluntarily electing to participate in physical activity. All participants are strongly encouraged to have a health evaluation by their physician.

• All non-student members must sign the “Release and Waiver of Liability and Indemnity Agreement”.

Risk Statement: Participants play at their own risk. Neither Recreational Services Staff, Kent State University or the agents thereof assume responsibility for injury or damage to personal property resulting from participation in recreational activity or an intramural contest.

Dress Code
• Shirt and shoes are required except in the locker rooms and swimming pool areas. A minimum of a short-sleeved, non-mesh T-shirt is required while on the Fitness and Weight Floors and when using machines in other locations.

• Clean swim attire must be worn in the pools and whirlpools. Cutoff shorts, T-shirts, thong bikinis, see-through suits and unapproved footwear are prohibited.

• Patrons are asked to wear clean athletic shoes that have scuff-resistant, non-marking soles in all activity areas of the facility.

• Closed ended shoes (no sandals) are required on the Fitness Floor and Weight Floor.

• Patrons must remove shoes before crossing the pool deck when going to and from the outdoor patio.

Food, Beverage, Tobacco, Gum
• Food and beverages purchased at the Summit Street Café may be consumed in the Mall, Summit Street Café and Game Room areas ONLY.

• Water in a squeeze bottle with a lid is permitted throughout the facility.

• Possession and/or consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited. Consumption of alcohol, intoxication, or the appearance/smell of intoxication will be cause for immediate removal from the facility.

• Tobacco use in any form is prohibited in the facility.

• Gum is prohibited in the facility beyond the Welcome Desk.

• Food purchased from outside vendors is not permitted in the SRWC.

Bikes/Pets/Roller Blades/Sleds
• Bicycles, skateboards, roller skates, in-line skates or sleds are not permitted inside the SRWC. For your convenience, bicycle racks are available outside the facility, and skates should be stored in lockers or storage cubicles. Only working companion animals are permitted in the building.

Child Supervision
• Children 12 years and under must be directly supervised (same room) by an adult member at all times in the SRWC. These children may have general use of the SRWC with the exception of the Fitness Floor, Weight Floor and equipment located on the track level and circuit.

• Children 13–17 years of age must be accompanied by an adult member into the SRWC. The parent must remain in the building during the child’s use; however, direct supervision is not required. Children in this age group must complete an instructional program called Resistance and Aerobic Training for Teens, and will then be certified to use this equipment on their own. This training includes instruction on the use of the Cybex equipment and all cardiovascular machines (treadmills, stationary bikes, etc). Children under 18 are not permitted in the Free Weight Room.

• Children over age 4 are not permitted in the locker room of the opposite sex. The Family Changing rooms are available for your convenience in this situation.

Child Supervision in the Natatorium: Children newborn—-8 years old, and any age child wearing a flotation device, must be accompanied in the water by an adult.

• Children 9 to 12 years old must have an adult with them in the natatorium.

• Children 13 years old and over are permitted in the natatorium without direct parental supervision.

• Children under 16 are not permitted in the spa.

• Before allowing a child in the vortex or deep water, the lifeguard may require a child to demonstrate his/her deep-water swimming ability.

Signs/Announcements
• Any request to post signs in the SRWC must be directed to the Assistant Director, Marketing and Public Relations and is subject to approval based upon content and message. No handwritten signs will be approved. Please have a copy of your professionally produced sign with you when making your request.

• Due to limited space for postings, only announcements related to recreation, wellness or athletics will be posted.

Soliciting
• Soliciting is not permitted inside the Student Recreation and Wellness Center. Organizations must schedule and pay for space by calling the Assistant Director of marketing to conduct fund raising or promotional activities. Guest Pass sponsors may not be solicited. Membership privileges may be revoked if a member assists unknown individuals trying to gain access into the facility.

Natatorium


Lap & Leisure Pools
• All pools will be cleared of members and guests during severe weather.

• For your safety, the Leisure Pool has 10 minute hourly safety breaks.

• Showers must be taken before entering any of the pools.

• Appropriate swimming (swimsuit) attire must be worn. NO T-shirts, gym shorts, sports bras, thongs etc…

• Chewing gum, food, and glass containers are not permitted in or around pools.

• Street shoes are not permitted on the pool deck.

• When requested, lap swimmers shall circle swim in a counter-clockwise direction.

• Kickboards, pull buoys, dumbbells, wet belts, etc… are used for exercise only. Wet belts are not to be used as flotation devices for children.

• Diving, running on the decks, and horseplay in or around the pools is not allowed.

• At the discretion of the lifeguard, diving rings, noodles and balls may be used in the leisure pool but not in the vortex. Large floating devices are not permitted.

• Swim diapers or plastic pants are required for children not toilet trained.

• Please do not talk to the lifeguard while he/she is actively scanning the pool.

• People using the vortex must be able to swim in deep water. Vortex capacity is six people.

• Public display of affection is not permitted.

Spa Rules
• Adults, sixteen years and older, may use the spa.

• For your safety, please limit your use of the spa to fifteen (15) minutes.

• Spa capacity is sixteen (16) people.

• Please follow the additional precautions posted on the wall by the spa controls.

Sauna Rules
• For ADULTS ONLY. No children under the age of sixteen (16).

• Due to high temperatures, limit your use to a maximum of ten (10) minutes.

• Please Shower before entering.

• No food or drink is allowed inside.

• Cool down at least five (5) minutes after exercise before using sauna.

• The sauna can be dangerous to your health. People with high blood pressure, heart disease, respiratory problems or who are pregnant should avoid exposure to heat.

Fitness Floor Policies


• Maximum use for Cardiovascular equipment is 30 minutes per session. Patrons may only sign up on the waiting list for one time slot.

• Patrons 13-17 may use the Fitness Floor after completing the Resistance Training for Teens program.

• For the protection of all our guests, full sleeved t-shirts are required while on the Fitness Floor and Weight Floor and while using equipment in the Circuit and on the Track.

• Please follow all safety instructions posted on equipment.

• Fitness Floor equipment must remain in the fitness area.

• Appropriate athletic apparel and shoes are required (cargo pants/shorts, jeans, boots, flip flogs, and open toed shoes are not permitted.)

• Water is permitted in plastic closed containers only.

• Patrons must use extreme caution when lifting weights to avoid any potential injury to themselves or others. Toploading additional weights onto weight stack machines is unsafe and prohibited.

• Patrons are encouraged to wipe off machines before and after use.

• Patrons must limit their workout times to approximately 15 minute intervals per piece of circuit training and free weight equipment on the Fitness Floor.

• Please note: Staff is available to assist you in having a safe and enjoyable workout. Policy reminders made by the staff are to benefit all patrons.

Weight Floor Policies


• Patrons must be 18 or over to be in the Weight Room.

• Patrons are Required to Re-Rack all Weights after use.

• Patrons are Required to return equipment to its proper location/starting position after use.

• Due to facility space limitations and safety concerns, the following free weight lifts are not permitted: snatch, jerk and power clean lifts.

• Collars are Required on all free bar Lifts.

• Slamming or dropping of weights is prohibited.

• Improper use of equipment is not permitted. This includes but is not limited to standing on equipment, standing on weights, stacking weights under equipment, top loading equipment and stepping on weights.

• Equipment should remain in the weight room. Only approved equipment from SRWC staff may be moved.

• Weights are not to be leaned against walls, columns, other equipment or mirrors.

• Immediately report any weight room related injury or facility/ equipment irregularity to staff on duty.

• The use of chalk is prohibited.

• Please ask for assistance in using equipment with which you are not familiar.

• Follow appropriate weight room safety and etiquette practices, demonstrating courtesy toward others in the room at all times.

• Please wipe off benches and pads after use.

• Please follow all safety instructions posted on equipment.

• Water is permitted in plastic closed containers only.

• Full Sleeved T-Shirts are Required at all times while on the Weight Floor.

• Athletic shorts or sweatpants are required (Cargo Pants/Shorts and Jeans are not permitted).

• Athletic footwear is required (Boots, Flip-Flops, and Open Ended Shoes are not permitted).

• Tobacco products are not allowed in the SRWC.

• Please keep personal items (backpacks, book bags, and clothing) in a locker or in storage areas found throughout the facility. Patrons are responsible for all valuable and personal items.

• Personal trainers are available through the Department of Recreational Services. Outside Personal training is prohibited.

• A Complete List of SRWC Policies are available at the Welcome Desk and in the Pro Shop.

• Failure to abide by SRWC policies may result in loss of facility access and privileges.

Circuit Policies


• A full sleeved t-shirt is required on all equipment.

• The “Circuit” rotates clockwise only.

• Follow the voice prompt to begin and end each station

• “Circuit” trainers have priority at all times ( Non-Circuit Training is permitted as long as it does not interfere with Circuit Trainers).

• Patrons 13-17 may use the Circuit equipment after completing the Resistance Training for Teens program.

• Athletic Shorts or Sweatpants are Required (Cargo Pants/Shorts and Jeans are not permitted).

• Athletic Footwear is Required (Boots, Flip-Flops, and Open Ended Shoes are not permitted).

• Please follow all safety instructions posted on equipment.

• Cardio equipment is available to patrons on a first come first serve basis.

• Food and Drink are not permitted on or around equipment. Water only.

Sports Arena Courts Policies


• Courts may be used for Volleyball, Basketball, and Badminton.

• See Facility Rental information for details on reserving court space for groups.

• Inappropriate/Vulgar language and behavior is not permitted.

• Patrons may be asked to leave the facility if their behavior is deemed threatening or inappropriate.

• Non-marking court shoes are required at all times to use the hardwood floors in the SRWC.

• Participants must be present to call next and claim next game.

• Basketball games will be played a follows:
- Points—1’s and 2’s
- Games will be played to 16 points (games may be won by one point)
- Losing team must exit the court
- Patrons who have called next must present a team and play the winning team
- Patrons waiting for next game have priority over players from losing team
- If the winning team gives up court, patrons waiting for next game will have court priority
- Patrons may only claim next on one court

• Please Note: Patrons not following Court Procedures may be asked to leave the facility.

• Facility Staff are available to assist everyone with having a safe and enjoyable visit.

Challenge Play: Rules are available at the equipment issue desk for basketball, volleyball, racquetball, wallyball, indoor soccer and floor hockey.

Jogging / Walking Track


• The track is 1/7 of a mile on the inner two lanes, and 1/6 of a mile on the outer two lanes.

• The inside two lanes are designated for walkers. The outside two lanes are designated for joggers.

• Stretching areas are located adjacent to each side of the track. Users should not use walls, railings, or door handles as stretching aids.

• Participants should use a cuspidor if they need to clean their mouth. Please respect our building and do not spit on the floors, walls or in the water fountains.

• The track is intended for recreational purposes only. Competitive training is not permitted.

• Tank tops are allowed on the track. Sport bras alone are not adequate.

• The track direction for the day will be posted at the entrance to the track.

Wellness Suite


• The Wellness Suite is located on the lower level of the SRWC. It offers a wealth of information and services related to wellness, including: nutrition counseling, wellness education, and health screenings.

Adventure Center


Climbing Wall: The SRWC is pleased to offer an indoor climbing wall. Bouldering and rappelling are offered at The Wall for beginner through advanced participants.

• Try climbs at the Climbing Wall are available for $4.

• Users of the Wall must be certified prior to climbing (except try-climbers). The Department of Recreational Services Outdoor Adventure program is offering a variety of climbing clinics and special deals for individuals who are anxious to challenge the 35-foot Indoor Climbing Wall.

• The Wall is free for all approved climbers. To be approved, one must pass a safety test every 4 months at a cost of $10.00. For more information on the Indoor Climbing Wall, or any other Outdoor Adventure program, please feel free to stop by “The Wall”.

• For youth under 18, a parent must sign a waiver and be present while the child is climbing.

Outdoor Rental Center


• The SRWC offers a Rental Center with all the equipment necessary to plan your own adventure outing. Some of the items available for rent include: canoes and kayaks, wet suits, sleeping bags, tents, propane grills, cooking utensils and more. Call the Adventure Center for detailed rates and available items.
