All aquatics certifications are taught by American Red Cross-certified instructors. Please note that participation in a certification class does not guarantee certification. All skills related to the certification must be properly demonstrated (as defined by course outline) in order to receive certification.


Lifeguarding (342002)
This course teaches participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drowning and injuries. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be certified in Lifeguarding/First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Oxygen Administration and Preventing Disease Transmission.
Prerequisites: Continuous 300-yard swim. The test must be done in the following order: 100-yard front crawl, 100-yard breast stroke, 100-yards either front crawl or breaststroke. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using the front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7 - 10 feet, retrieve 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds.

FA/CPR/AED (342004)
This course trains lay responders to overcome any reluctance to act in emergency situations and to recognize and care for life-threatening respiratory or cardiac emergencies in adult, children and infants. This course also provides the lay responder with the knowledge and skills necessary in an emergency to help sustain life and to minimize pain and the consequences of injury or sudden illness until professional medical help arrives.

CPR/AED Professional Rescuer (342006-A1)
This course certifies participants to become professional rescuers (those with a duty to respond). Participants learn the role of an EMS system and how to respond appropriately to respiratory and cardiac emergencies. The skills taught in this course include two-person CPR, usage of a bag-valve mask and automated external defibrillation (AED).

Babysitter’s Training (342007)
This course provides individuals, ages 11 to 15, with the information and skills necessary to provide safe and responsible care for children in the absense of parents or adult guardians. This training will help participants develop skills in leadership and professionalism, basic care, safety and safe play and first aid.

These courses are set up as an alternate opportunity for groups to be certified in the following areas of safety: first aid, CPR (adult, infant, and child), or automated external defibrillation (AED). Courses are generally held at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center. Course schedules are dependent on the group needs and the facility space availability.
